The KuMoYa 145 series is a commercial DC electric railcar used to pull trains entering and leaving depots and factories.
The 100 and 200 series have storage space for equipment so they can also be used as rescue vehicles.
The 200 series can also be used as a control vehicle for AC/DC electric railcars and is equipped with a voltage detector on the roof.
JR West replaced the main motor from MT46 (100kW/h) to MT54 (120kW/h) and renumbered the original number +1000.
