In his childhood home, there was a very old wall clock from the 1700s with Roman numerals on it, which he observed with great interest. Several decades have passed since then. Studying the world around him was an important element in Jacobsen's creative process, and with pen and brush in hand, he explored the classical architecture, natural diversity, ancient furniture, and other objects he saw on his many travels to France and Italy. Several of Jacobsen's drawings and watercolors show an interest in Roman numeral clock faces, including an early drawing of a 17th-century clock in his home and a beautiful watercolor he painted in Capri's town square in 1937.
