[About the three waters of precious coral]
Our shop is located in Kochi Prefecture, a world-famous coral production area. Our workshop handles everything from purchasing coral logs to processing loose coral, as well as jewelry design and precious metal processing. Coral is a gemstone created by nature, and the colors and shapes of the coral logs vary immensely, making it difficult to create the same loose coral. Sometimes, we encounter pieces with beautiful color gradations that cannot be expressed in grade or words, or pieces with shapes so beautiful they could not be created by human hands. These are just some of the charms of precious coral, created by nature. We offer a wide variety of products, from high-quality to jewelry-quality, so please come and find your favorite coral.
[About precious coral]
Generally, what is processed into jewelry and called coral is the polished bone shaft produced by a living creature called coral.
Corals are in the same family as jellyfish and sea anemones, and are divided into the subclasses Hexacorallia and Octocorallia depending on the number of tentacles on the polyps. Within each of the Hexacorallia and Octocorallia, there are species called hard corals, which have a solid bony axis, and soft corals, which do not have a bony axis. Because the bony axis of Hexacorallia is brittle, octocorals are used as gemstones, but most are soft corals, which do not have a solid bony axis, and only some of these species are fashioned into gemstones.
[Deep sea coral]
This species was harvested near the Hawaiian Islands and Midway Islands, but is no longer harvested. At the time, logs harvested by Japanese ships were collected in Kochi and auctioned. There is no such thing as "Shirofu," but as the name suggests, it is harvested from the ocean depths of 1,000 meters, and many of them have cracks due to sudden changes in water pressure. It is transparent and characterized by white and light pink with dark pink patterns, giving it a very mysterious color.
*This is a general description, and there are exceptions even within the same type.
