Product Introduction
[Wings of Performance Recognized by the Marines]
Over 5,000 F-4 Phantom IIs were produced, deployed by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force, as well as 11 other nations, including the United Kingdom and Japan, and defended the skies of free nations for over 30 years. Its first flight was in 1958, and it was officially adopted as the U.S. Navy's carrier-based fighter. Its superior flight performance was demonstrated by breaking a succession of world aviation records, including speed and altitude records. The F-4J was developed for the Navy, following the first mass-produced B model and the G model, of which only 12 were produced. 522 aircraft were produced by December 1972. The engine was upgraded from the previous J-79GE-8 to the improved J-79GE-10, and the radar, fire control system, and bombing control system were enhanced to improve interception and ground attack capabilities. The ASW-11 data link system enabled automatic landings and improved ease of handling. Unit deployments began in 1967, and from the end of May 1968, they were deployed one after another to the Vietnam War, which was intensifying. Marine Corps aviation units deployed in Vietnam, such as the 212th and 232nd Fighter Attack Squadrons, were also equipped with F-4Js, and they demonstrated their capabilities in close support of Marine ground forces, carrying conventional bombs such as the Mk.82 and Sidewinder bombers. While Marine Corps F-4Js did not see many engagements with North Vietnamese Air Force aircraft, an F-4J flown by Major L.T. Lassiter and Captain J.D. Cummings of the 333rd Marine Fighter Attack Squadron successfully shot down a MiG-21 fighter in September 1972.
