About the Author

Born in Tsuyama City, Okayama Prefecture in 1957. Graduated from the Department of Japanese History, Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo.
Currently a professor at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo. Doctor of Literature.
In 1992, he won the 40th Japan Essayist Club Award for "The Diary of an Edo Housekeeper" (Kodansha Academic Library).
His publications include "Understanding the Flow of Japanese History" and "The Definitive Edo Stroll" (both published by KADOKAWA),
"First-Class Historical Sources of Japanese History" (Kobunsha Shinsho), "Bushido: A Modern Translation" (Chikuma Shinsho), and "Techniques for Grasping History" (Shincho Shinsho).
He has also appeared frequently on television and radio, including NHK Educational TV's "Chiesen.
